Skills Pathway for Cybersecurity - Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the Skills Pathway for Cybersecurity?

The Skills Pathway for Cybersecurity is industry-led and developed with the active involvement of 13 founding employers. Supported by an advisory committee, this initiative offers guidance for individuals aspiring to enter the cybersecurity field, including mid-career individuals looking to transition into this dynamic sector. The pathway provides guidance on acquiring essential skills for entry-level positions and supports advancement into various roles within cybersecurity. It emphasises industry-relevant training and industry-recognised certifications to cultivate a skilled cybersecurity workforce. Over the coming year, the Skills Pathway for Cybersecurity will pave the way towards CSA’s national initiative to develop a professional framework for the cybersecurity workforce.

This pathway is tailored for new entrants and mid-careerists professionals who wish to embark on or transition into the cybersecurity industry. For example, mid-career professionals aspiring to entering cybersecurity could use this pathway to plan their skills development. It also caters to individuals looking to advance their careers by acquiring new skills, certifications, and practical experiences essential to entering the cybersecurity industry.

The pathway typically comprises:

  • Industry-recognised Certifications: Curated industry certifications that validate practical proficiency in specific cybersecurity domains and are recognised by key employers in Singapore.
  • Practical Experience: Internships through which learners will acquire cybersecurity work experiences and skillsets.

Typically, it is advisable for entrants to have some fundamental understanding of IT and cybersecurity concepts.

At Level 1, entrants will need to attain a Level 1 cybersecurity certification to be considered for internships with potential employers, where they will gain practical experience and foundational cybersecurity skills.

At Level 2, participants will need to attain a Level 2 certification and have at least three months of relevant internship or work experiences before being considered for job interview* with potential employers.

Specific entry prerequisites for each course, certification, and job role can be found on skillspathway.scs.org.sg/career-pathway/.

*Please note that availability of internships or job interviews is contingent upon current employer requirements. This process generally involves resume evaluation, assessments, interviews, and reference checks, with no assurance of an interview. Employers prioritise fairness and confidentiality, and organisational policies may be subject to change at their discretion. Please ensure your contact information is up-to date, and you retain the option to withdraw your application at any point.

You can find detailed information about Level 1 and Level 2 courses and certifications on skillspathway.scs.org.sg/courses-certifications/. This resource will provide guidance on the list of Level 1 and 2 courses and certifications to align with your career goals and skill development needs.

It depends on the pace of learning and duration of courses or certifications that you will undergo and this is based on individuals’ preferences and requirements, training course and certification schedules. For information on courses and certifications, please consult the respective training providers or certification bodies.

No, completing Level 1 courses and certification is not mandatory before progressing to Level 2 in the pathway. The decision should be based on the individual’s background knowledge, work experience, and preferred learning format. We recommend individuals assess their knowledge and competency with the training/certification provider to determine the most suitable Level 1 or Level 2 courses and certifications that will optimise their learning outcomes.
